The Paphos (Pafos) District surrounds the coastal town of Paphos, once the ancient capital of Cyprus and today amongst the island's most popular tourist resorts. Its age old history and archaeological treasures have merited the towns naming as a world heritage site by UNESCO.
The town itself has two main areas, Kato Paphos (lower Paphos) and Pano Paphos (upper Paphos).
Kato Paphos is best known for its mediaeval fort; old fishing harbour; and sea-front promenade and is highly popular with tourists and locals alike! There are numerous sandy beaches here, along with excellent restaurants and entertainment facilities. Cultural events ranging from operas to art exhibitions and concerts regularly take place here. Pano Paphos encircles the colourful Old Market, and is brimming with modern shops and boutiques.
The suburbs of Paphos are also becoming increasingly popular. Mostly located on the lower slopes of the hills that rise gently from Paphos, these areas have wonderful sea views, and are only a short drive from the town centre. Popular suburban retreats include Peyia, Tala, Tremithousa, Mesa Chorio, Konia, Anavargos, and Yeroskipou. There are also many quieter rural villages a little further outside Paphos where traditional ways still prevail, including Tsada, Kathikas, Stroumpi and Polemi.
